Don't worry, network!
My thanks to all who attended the membership luau on September 18 at Lake Crabtree County Park. It was a fun opportunity to socialize outside of a business environment, to enjoy the sunshine (what was left of it!), and to network in a relaxed setting.

Networking is one of the many benefits offered by membership in the STC Carolina Chapter. The monthly meetings provide opportunities to make valuable business contacts and to learn from others in our profession. Since becoming membership manager in June, I've been energized by the support of those on the administrative council and by their drive to expand the role of the chapter within the community.

Despite the proliferation of e-mail, blogging, and text messaging, good writing skills are at a premium. As professional writers, we can make important contributions by volunteering our skills to worthy organizations throughout the Triangle. From producing church newsletters to editing resumes of returning veterans, we can help individuals and groups get their message across in a powerful and effective way.

Networking is one of the many benefits offered by membership in the STC Carolina Chapter.
But there are selfish reasons to get involved in chapter activities as well. The tools of technical communication are constantly changing, so the training committee is investigating training opportunities. Looking for a job? Interested in organizing a Career Quest SIG? Together, we can make it happen.

Membership in the chapter doesn't have to be all about work, though. We have more in common than our profession. One of my goals as membership manager is to provide more opportunities for members to socialize at events unrelated to technical writing, such as book discussions or author readings. Hey, we're writers. We like to read.

Remember, this is your chapter. If you've got an idea that would help the STC Carolina Chapter better meet your needs, please contact the leadership, or join the discussion at our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2405569345). To paraphrase Margaret Mead, never underestimate the power of a small group of dedicated individuals to change the world. It's the only thing that ever has.
