At the end of every year, I find it worthwhile to reflect on how far I've come and what I'm looking forward to in the year to come. Part of this yearly reflection includes evaluating what I've done to help or advance the cause of technical writers. As the managing editor of this award-winning publication, I see it as part of my job to uphold the reputation we as technical writers have in our area and to challenge any incorrect perceptions.

We are perceived many different ways by different groups, but one thing I know for certain: we are a respected group of professionals and people listen to what we have to say. There is no better example of this than the Annual Competitions. Bill Bryan summarizes the all-day judging event and the many benefits volunteers receive for their dedication.

William Gray, a novice judge this year, reflects on how his perceptions of technical writers have changed since he first learned of the profession and up until now. He also sheds light on how people at one company viewed technical writers in general, but how he sought to forge his own opinions.

I have been volunteering my time to the Carolina chapter for over five years and have always considered a membership. Next year I will finally become a member. Andrea Wenger provides some great reasons to join before the year is over. She also recaps this year's presentations and events.

Next year, the STC Summit will be held in Atlanta. I, along with several others, are looking forward to making the trip and ensuring the Carolina chapter has a strong presence. If you want to help us stay a strong chapter, please think about how you can contribute to this chapter next year.
