Competition entries that win distinguished awards in the Carolina chapter competitions have the opportunity to enter the International STC competition. This year, 10 entries from our chapter competition not only entered, but won!

We collected one Best of Show award (wow!), three awards of Distinction, three awards of Excellence, and four awards of Merit. This proves that technical communicators in our area produce outstanding, high quality work! Being recognized at the International level is a great honor, and we congratulate those winners.

The articles below describe those awards and the teams that contributed to the success of each project.

IBM Wins Best of Show in Online Competition

Last issue we announced that one of our chapter entries, IBM SAN File System Overview, won International Best of Show at STC’s international online competition. Below is a photo of (l-r) Mike Fahy, Missy Johnson, Kristine Olka, Sandy Kipp—the IBM team who created this excellent product.

Although the team was not able to attend the awards presentation at the Annual Conference in Seattle, one of their coworkers, Yvonne Earnshaw, accepted the award on their behalf. Again, our sincere congratulations to the IBM team.

Publications Competitions

Steven Resser and Carla Atkinson won an Award of Distinction at the International level for SAS Regatta invitation in the promotional materials design category of the international technical art competition.

This dimensional mailer was created to drive attendance to two high-level regatta events in Newport, Rhode Island, and San Diego, California. Aimed at C-level Life Sciences executives, these events were designed to build awareness and demonstrate thought leadership within the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

The creative team put together a “message in a bottle”-themed mailing featuring a glass bottle with seashells and a rolled-up parchment invitation inside (the bottle was finished off with a custom label, cork and a bit of rope around the “neck”), an insert, a registration form, and crinkle paper.

Hope Chandler, Karen Pepe, and Tammi Kay George won an Award of Distinction at the International level for Data Quality: A Best Practices Forum Invitation in the promotional materials design category of the international technical publications competition.

The entry was an invitation to a data quality forum hosted by SAS, written and designed to grab the attention of IT directors and managers, and other managers in charge of their organization’s data quality initiatives who get inundated with promotional mail. It provided a high quality, visually appealing mailer that would pique their curiosity about the event.

One judge in the international competition wrote: “In my opinion, this is an outstanding piece! I love the choice of design elements and how consistently they are used. What is especially effective is using the water drips on the outside, then establishing an adrenaline rush and “wow” factor inside the fully opened piece. That energy alone makes me want to read further.”

John Tibbetts and Patty Snow won an Award of Excellence at the international level in the technical publications for Coastal Heritage magazine.

The South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium uses Coastal Heritage, a quarterly magazine, to describe environmental, historical, technological, and cultural patterns of change along the coast and how those patterns affect residents and visitors. The magazine is written and designed to appeal to a variety of audiences: students, educators, natural-resource managers and other policy makers, elected and appointed officials, coastal and marine businesses, coastal property owners, and interested citizens. Each issue is 16 pages.

One judge in the international competition wrote: “I was thoroughly charmed by the magazine. Coastal areas are very dear to me, and Coastal Heritage provides a voice for the respect, care, and nurturing that we need not only in South Carolina but throughout the world.”

Karen Lauterbach and Shari Lambert won an Award of Excellence at the International level for Expanding Our Reach: Annual Report 2003 in the annual report design category of the technical art competition.

The report emphasized the breadth and depth of RTI services, as well as the new locations where we were providing innovative research and technical solutions. The design objective was to create an unusual cover that would stand out among the many annual reports our clients receive. The design was carried throughout the inside pages by turning the layout horizontal and creating an unusual die-cut cover. To stay within budget, the cover was printed in one color on both sides.

Robert Burke, Jason Mathes, and Eric Walton won an award of Excellence at the International level for Power Column 2 Vertical Lift Module System in the promotional materials category of the technical publications competition.

This document was created to accompany a new product release for FKI Logistex. It was designed to emphasize the vertical nature of the product while creatively making use of the space provided by a vertical fold out flap on page 3. Combining some less-than-ideal client-provided photography (always good for some fun) with some interesting CAD elements resulted in a pleasing look that meshed well with the company’s existing product literature. FKI Logistex was thrilled with the final piece and was excited to hear about the STC awards.
