Well, it wasn’t so much dangerous as it was exhilarating, enlightening, and invigorating. It is hard to believe that my term as President of the Carolina Chapter is almost up. It seems only yesterday I was putting together my slide deck for Vision Day and wondering what in the world I had gotten myself into. Accepting such a challenge was definitely beyond my comfort zone. But, it has been a great experience, and one of the best things I have done for enhancing both my personal and professional growth.
STC has played a pivotal role in my career serving as a means to meet others in the profession, keep up to date with technologies, skills, and the industry, and provide the tools and opportunities to make me a better technical communicator. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve in this capacity. We accomplished quite a bit this year (programs, socials, workshops, mentoring and employment databases, etc.), and I am extremely proud that several of our members were honored (as Associate Fellow and Fellow) by the Society. And our Chapter was honored as a Community of Distinction, the top honor bestowed on individual Chapters.
I have touted the benefits of membership and volunteering throughout the year. STC Carolina is an exemplary community because of our members and especially our volunteers, who are the heart of our Society and our Chapter. We are always seeking volunteers to help with chapter activities and events.
There’s no shortage of volunteer opportunities, which often translate into new skills and networking. Getting to know other technical communicators in the area can enrich your personal life and career. Being active in the chapter is one of the best and easiest ways to meet other technical communicators, even if you only devote only a few hours a month to the activity. Accept a challenge and move out of your comfort zone! You won’t regret it.
As my term as President comes to a close, I've realized that one of the most important responsibilities of a leader is to have a strong succession plan. It doesn't matter that the organization is flourishing in the moment if you don't build a path for future success. I look forward to my new role as Immediate Past President and having Christina Mayr take over the driver’s seat as President. You might want to put your shades on folks as the future is looking mighty bright!

The Carolina Chapter is one of the most consistent, innovative, and active communities in the Society. Thanks to everyone who volunteered and participated, and made this tenure so successful. I am certain the incoming Board will continue to aspire to a high level with a set of impressive initiatives and activities for the upcoming term.
