Fall is a busy time for the STC Carolina Chapter. It’s competition season, plus we’ve got some other fun activities planned. Watch the website and email announcements for more information on dates and locales.

October Social

I can’t disclose the details yet of our upcoming October social, but rumor has it that it involves chocolate. Stay tuned!

SpeedCon Unconference

The STC Carolina Chapter is once again a sponsor of the SpeedCon Unconference. This free annual event, held by NC State’s SIGDOC Chapter, will take place on November 17 in Tompkins Hall on the campus of NC State University. SpeedCon offers a relaxed and flexible environment where you can present on a topic of interest to technical communicators, or learn from local experts in the field. For more information and to register, visit the SpeedCon website.

Competitions

STC competitions offer an excellent way for you and your team to get recognition.

Our annual competition is in full swing, with entries due no later than October 23. STC competitions offer an excellent way for you and your team to get recognition for your technical publication, website, help system, training, and other forms of technical communication. Judges evaluate entries against a checklist of criteria and decide whether to nominate each entry for an award. The top award winners go on to compete for Best of Show. If your entry wins a Distinguished or Excellence award from the Carolina Chapter, you may mail the entry to the STC International Summit Awards competitions held in the spring.

To submit an entry, visit the Submitters’ Corner on our website.

Judging Day

On November 3, we’ll hold our annual competition Judging Day at SAS in Cary. Like last year, this will be an all-day event, with training in the morning and judging in the afternoon. Unlike last year, we’ll be assigning fewer entries per judge team to make it easier to complete the judging within the allotted time. And as always, breakfast and lunch will be provided.

If you have experience in writing, editing, or developing documentation or you have experience with artistic design of technical illustrations, photographs, posters, or packaging, you can serve as a judge in our annual competition. Judging helps you gain new ideas and lets you discuss writing, editing, and design issues with communicators outside your immediate work circle.

We do not require Carolina Chapter membership or experience with judging for you to participate. More experienced judges on your team will provide guidance. For further information and to sign up, visit the Judges’ Corner on our website.

Best of Show Judging

The competition’s Best of Show winner will be selected at our December 6 meeting. We’ll get together for appetizers at a local restaurant, then hear from the judging teams on why they nominated their entries for Best of Show. Attendees will vote for their choice.

With such a wide variety of upcoming events, I hope you’re able to participate in at least one. Make the most of your chapter membership!
