The Management SIG Lives!

by Kathleen Mohar, Carolina Chapter Management SIG Manager

Although dormant for several months, the Carolina Chapter’s Management SIG (Special Interest Group) is back in business.

Kayla Gray, Adrian West, Caroline Cate, Ottis Cowper, and I met November 4, 2005, and discussed plans for Management SIG meetings this winter. We agreed to hold meeting at RTI, with a phone-in line available, in January, March, and May from 11:30 am to 1 pm.

The January meeting will be Wednesday, January 11th, 2006, and the topic will be “Performance Review and Staff Development.”

We also discussed potential topics for other upcoming meetings. Topics considered for upcoming meetings include:
  • Resources for Managers (best books, web sites, training, etc.)
  • Strategies and Tools for Communicating with Staff across Geographic Locations
  • Dealing with Problem Employees
  • Staying Ahead of the Curve: Web Publication, Graphics, Writing, and Authoring Tools
  • Staff Motivation Book Discussion
The goal of all Management SIG meetings is to inform publication managers of trends and issues related to managing publications projects, educate them in practices that result in high-quality technical materials, and provide a forum for the exchange of information relevant to management of technical communication projects and personnel.

The SIG is always looking for new members and volunteers. If you are interested in being a part of our group, or if you have ideas for how the SIG can flourish this winter, please feel free to contact me.

Kathleen can be reached at kbm at rti dot org.
