From the Editor's Desk: It's 2010!

I can't believe that the first quarter of 2010 has already past. So much has happened that it's almost become a blur. On a personal front, I have added a new addition to the Kinder family with the birth of my second son, Drew. On a professional front, it marks the eighth year I have worked at my current company, SAS. STC has gotten over the "hump" of making some significant decisions and changes. The economy is, well, er, they say it's in recovery. With so many different things happening in the world around me, I wanted to make this first 2010 issue of Carolina Communiqué reflect that diversity.

Thus, this issue touches on editing, STC events, future predictions for our profession, and tools. With this issue, you can:
  • Brush up on your knowledge of verbs with Andrea Wenger's article on verb use in procedures and descriptions.
  • Learn about the value STC provides communities with Diana Buttram's help.
  • Find out how David Dick got hired and worked recently as an IT contractor.
  • Read briefings on recent past and future STC and technical communication-related events:
    • Christina Eftekhar recaps the Carolina chapter's February meeting on designing accessible documents.
    • Bea Bailey summarizes some important activities that took place over the past year as well as the chapter's recent awards banquet.
    • Elaine Abousalh provides valuable information for first-time Summit goers.
  • Find out what your colleagues think the future holds:
    • Michael Harvey reflects on the idea of shifting our focus on the services that we provide rather than the products we deliver.
    • Steven Jong, candidate for STC secretary, gives us his take on the past, present, and future of technical writing and STC.
  • Do your homework on tech comm tools with:
    • Sheila Loring, as she introduces us to the oXygen 11 XML editor.
    • Peggy Harvey, as she writes about how Adobe Community Help brings together help, instruction, articles, videos, and more.
    • Rich Maggiani, as he provides tips on managing your Twitter stream(s).
